Director statement
Making films is the possibility to communicate a point of view by means of an immersive experience. And that’s what I aim to achieve: that when watching my films, people can relate to the same feelings that I have in my chest, and to the same feelings that the characters are sharing with the audience.
Trans people have gone and still go through a lot. And as a Brazilian person, I come from the country that has the highest murder rates towards trans women in the world.
Having that sad statistic in mind, knowing that prejudice goes hand in hand with ignorance, and with the desire to work with the queer community (as a queer person I believe that our stories are still underrepresented), I approached the characters with the idea of this documentary.
I was told by them that documentaries about their lives tend to be sad stories. And what do they gain out of letting people see their scars?
That was the moment when I decided that this story needed to be positive. A ray of light that would illuminate the lives of other immigrants in the queer community. A hope, an example. And not just for the queer community, for everyone.
I learned so much with this story, and I hope that whoever sees it, has the chance to learn as well. To see how many beautiful things are being done by the trans community. To be able to understand that projects made by and for trans people are necessary.
To understand that immigration it is not always a matter of choice.
I felt embraced by this film and by the softness of these women. I hope you do too.
