AWARDS

  • FESTIVAL TULIPANI di SETA NERA  Italy, 2024
“BEST MUSICS” award to Diego Guarnieri

    Motivation of the jury:

“Soul is a short film where we talk about the ethnic cleansing carried out by the Yugoslavians, events which have been talked about little in all these years. A great Italian tragedy where it was easy to fall into mannerism in the musical commentary. But the composer, DIEGO GUARNIERI, with a few notes and the use of reverbs on the instruments, managed to create those shadows of sound that led us to memories of the woman on the train. A musical commentary which, although present, did not override the voices of the protagonists giving a sense of tragedy to words and history.”

Director statement

The short film, in addition to preserving and renewing the memory of the Istrian exodus, attempts to explore the meaning of SOUL.

According to many philosophies, it is thought that the knowledge acquired by the soul in previous lives is not reset with the new incarnation, but becomes the starting point for continuing to progress on the evolutionary scale of existence. This conception can also be connected to the concept of “collective soul” or “world soul”, which indicates the memory and experience accumulated by all humanity throughout history.

The challenge from a director’s point of view was trying to represent how much every action in our life touches some string that vibrates forever. ANIMA wants to be an invitation for the new generations to never stop seeking the truth and understanding their roots.

Openly addressing history, including painful or controversial episodes, can help create a more just society by promoting tolerance,
equality and respect for the rights of all.
