I have lived most of my life in a small town in Campania, Avellino, strongly linked to its traditions but which, in order to survive, needs renewal. This condition causes false prophets to insinuate themselves, promising salvation with their symbols, without realizing that they are leading the community to a loss of cultural identity. The recurrence was brought to life from this: it is the meeting between two people who cannot understand each other and who probably never will, being too attached to their beliefs. Aufiero, determined not to give in to compromises and to remain static, remains obsessively stuck in the past. Nottola, on the other hand, blinded by the myth of modernity, fails to see the limitations of the city he leads. In the background, the figure of The Afflicted, who painfully witnesses his abandonment. With this short film, I wanted to play with contrasts: the old and the new, the city and the forest, trying to focus with the direction on the real protagonist of each scene, which is not always Aufiero.
Basically, with this short film I have not only tried to talk about the traditions that are being lost but also to show how human selfishness, increasingly rampant, makes citizens forget the great beauty that lies behind communication and solidarity with the other, the observation and understanding of what surrounds us.
